MAKE A BIG SPLASH IN TROPICAL MERMAID ‘TAIL’
ONCE ON THIS ISLAND JR. BEGINNING MARCH 30TH
GODFREY, IL, MARCH 21, 2017 – St. Ambrose Catholic School Drama Club students will retell the classic “Little Mermaid” fairy tale musically through their production of Once on This Island JR. beginning March 30th it was announced today by Freddie Gershon, CEO of Music Theatre International (MTI). Once on this Island JR. is part of the MTI Broadway Junior Collection®, MTI’s special collection of musicals for younger performers which includes “JR.” titles, 60-minute musicals for performance by middle school children; and “KIDS” titles, 30-minute musicals for performance by elementary school children.
Once on This Island JR. is an adaptation of the popular Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” set in the Caribbean. The story follows Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a young man from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his land, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
“There is something very meaningful in having students with a wide range of interests and talents work together on a show with such a profound message about the power of love. We hope your community will join us in applauding all the ways that these young people have contributed towards creating their unique interpretation of Once on this Island JR.,” says Gershon.
St. Ambrose School Drama Club will present the MTI Broadway Junior production Once on this Island JR. on March 30th and March 31st at 7:00 pm at St. Ambrose Church located at 820 West Homer Adams Parkway, Godfrey, IL. Tickets cost $6/adult and $3/student and may be purchased by stopping by the school office or the church office or by calling 466-4216.
*There are 30 students in the cast and crew ranging in ages from 3rd – 8th grades. They have been working on the show for over three months and are anxious to share it with the community. Jean Heil, Principal at St. Ambrose, is the Director and Karie Preston, Fine Arts teacher at St. Ambrose, is the Music and Artistic Director. This is the fifth production Heil and Preston have teamed together to produce, and it is definitely one of their favorites. Thanks to the parents who have supported this program at our school and for the many staff and community members who have contributed with great effort to continue to grow and strengthen this meaningful experience for our students.
